Training Course

ECCCNYS and High Performance Buildings and Programs

This course will cover residential high performance building programs including the Energy Star Program, U.S. DOE Zero Energy Ready Program, Passive House, and to a lesser extent, LEED and the National Green Building Standard.  For each program, there will be an overview of requirements and a description of how these requirements differ from the requirements of the 2015 ECCCNYS.  Roles and responsibilities for the builder as well as for each trade will be described.  Case studies will be used extensively to provide practical examples of how to make a code-compliant home a high performance home with construction details that illustrate best practices with respect to a tight, well insulated building envelope, very efficient mechanical equipment and system design and installation, and typically LED lighting throughout.

The course will emphasize the importance of a whole systems approach to the design and construction of residential buildings that is at the crux of all of the high performance programs.  Finally, the course will describe the added value and advantages to the Builder and the homeowner of moving beyond mere code compliance to a focus on above-code, high performance building strategies.
