Builder Spotlight: United Way of Long Island

Are you ready for a home that lives, works, and lasts better? Homes are being built to be so energy efficient that a renewable energy system can offset all or most of their annual energy consumption. These homes are built across the country with a select few of these award-winning homes appearing in NY state. The homes are independently certified to meet DOE Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) guidelines and constructed by a select group of top builders. One of these top builders is United Way of Long Island. They have constructed two award-winning homes in NY.

“We’ve made a 100% commitment to build to the DOE ZERH program moving forward with new and retrofit homes. When people talk Passive House, I say why go there when you could do this instead? Same with LEED. To me it’s a no-brainer. It’s got everything I’ve been looking for.”

– Rick Wertheim, program manager, United Way of Long Island Housing Development Corp.

“The ZERH provides sustainable energy savings, helping to lower monthly expenses and reducing any ongoing costly maintenance. The DOE ZERH program is the best solution for the type of housing we produce. It is the convergence of the vast knowledge of the national labs coupled with the innovative strategies of the ZERH program components.”

Home Energy Heroes makes it easy for homebuyers to find builders, trade contractors, architects and home energy raters who have participated in training certified by the New York Department of State and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. These industry professionals have shown a level of commitment to their craft and to providing New Yorkers with quality homes that frequently go well beyond compliance into the realm of high performance.

This initiative is possible thanks to partners like CRBRA who host these events for their members and the following sponsors who provide food and other support:  DuPont Tyvek distributed by ParksiteBROAN NuTone, and Mitsubishi, and Owens Corning.
